Two supplementary angles differ by $$34^o$$. Then the angles are __________.

ANSWER

$$107^o, 73^o$$

SOLUTION
Let two supplementary angles are $$x$$ and $$y$$
We know, $$ x+y=180^o$$    ....(1)
As given in the question $$x-y=34^o$$
$$\Rightarrow x=34+y$$     .....(2)
Putting the value of $$x$$ in terms of $$y$$ in the eqn (1) we get
$$34+y+y=180\\ \Rightarrow 2y=146\\ \Rightarrow y=73^o$$
And $$x=34+y$$
$$=34+73$$
$$=107^o$$
Therefore, the angles are $$107^0$$ and $$73^0$$.

Read the following two statements which are taken as axioms:
(i) If two lines intersect each other, then the vertically opposite angles are not equal.
(ii) If a ray stands on a line, then the sum of two adjacent angles so formed is equal to $$180^0$$.
Is this system of axioms consistent? Justify your answer.
